First Impressions – Build Quality & Design

The first thing you notice is the camo paint job—and not the cheap, printed kind. This finish looks and feels durable, giving the bike a rugged, premium vibe right out of the box. The step-through frame makes mounting easy, and the bike’s overall fit and finish immediately stand out compared to many e-bikes in its class.

The mid-mounted air shock deserves its own spotlight. I’ve tested a lot of suspension setups, and this is hands-down the nicest mid-mounted shock I’ve ever ridden—buttery smooth over bumps while staying firm enough to prevent wallowing at speed.

Ride Test Results – Real-World Performance

I rode over 100 miles during my testing period, mixing paved roads, gravel paths, and light off-road trails. I really try to experience everything a rider could experience on their ride so I can tell you exactly how it will perform. Here’s how the Mokwheel Obsidian ST performed in the areas that matter most:

Mokwheel Obsidian ST motor

Speed & Power

The 750-watt motor has plenty of power and speed. While the spec sheet says 28mph, in pedal assist 5, I was able to hit 31mph on flat pavement during my test ride. The torque sensor starts working immediately, especially in the lower speeds, making acceleration feel punchy without being jerky. It only takes a few seconds to go from 0 to 31mph.

Comfort & Handling

The dual suspension setup is the star of the show. I am really impressed with the mid-mounted adjustable air shock. It provides lots of cushion when going over bumps or riding off-road trails. It was set perfectly from the factory, but you can adjust it to your liking. The front suspension is 130mm and its adjustable. Its easy to tighten or loosen to however feels best to you. The 26″ x 4″ fat tires add extra cushioning and grip, especially on loose gravel. Overall the Obsidian ST is one of the most comfortable e-bikes I have ever ridden.

Mokwheel Obsidian ST hydraulic brakes

Braking

The TEKTRO hydraulic brakes are responsive, and work well with no squeaks or fade even after repeated hard stops. In my YouTube review I performed a high speed brake test and was able to stop in a respectable distance without skidding out of control. After my hill test, I tested the hydraulic brakes again doing a controlled decent from the top of the sand hill. Again, they performed well allowing me to control my speed going down a steep hill without losing control in the sugar sand.

Range & Battery

The Mokwheel Obsidian ST is powered by a UL-certified 48V, 19.6Ah removable lithium-ion battery with a side charging port and support for inverter or solar charging.

In one real-world ride, the bike covered 17.64 miles in about 1 hour and 17 minutes, reaching speeds of up to 31 mph and averaging around 14 mph. Even after this high-speed, mixed-terrain ride with hill climbs and off-road sections, the battery still showed well over half its capacity remaining.

Based on that performance, a conservative full-charge range estimate under similar aggressive riding conditions is around 35 miles or more. Riders who mix in moderate pedaling and maintain lower speeds can expect up to 40 miles or beyond. As with any e-bike, range will vary depending on rider weight, terrain, assist level, and riding style.

FAQs – Mokwheel Obsidian ST

Q: What is the top speed of the Mokwheel Obsidian ST?
A: Advertised at 20mph using the throttle and 28mph when pedaling, but I reached 31mph in testing. It depends on how fast you can pedal.

Q: How far can it go on a single charge?
A: The manufacturer says it can go between 60-80 miles on a charge. But you won’t get that in the real world. Expect to get around 40-45 miles of range. You will get more if you are a lighter rider and pedaling most of the time and less if oyu are heavier and use the throttle most of the time.

Q: Can it be charged with solar panels?
A: Yes, Mokwheel sells solar panels you can use to charge the e-bike when away from electrical power. They also sell an inverter that allows you to use the battery on the Obsidian ST to power your devices let’s say while camping.

Q: How heavy is it?
A: About 77 lbs, which isn’t bad for a large step-through e-bike. Most of the Obsidian ST is made from aluminum to try and keep the weight down.

Q: Is it good for off-road riding?
A: Yes—its dual suspension and fat tires handle gravel and light trails very well. The mid-mounted shock is the best I’ve seen on an e-bike to date. Its adjustable for the rider weight and it makes you feel like you are riding on a cloud. Its perfect for medium to rough off-road trails.

Q: Can the battery be removed for charging?
A: Yes, the 48V 19.6Ah lithium-ion battery is built into the frame but removable with a key, allowing you to charge it indoors without having to bring the whole e-bike inside.

Q: What kind of brakes does the Obsidian ST have?
A: It comes equipped with Tektro hydraulic disc brakes, which deliver strong, reliable stopping power and performed well in my tests. This is a welcome upgrade compared to mechanical disc brakes.

Q: What kind of sensors does the Obsidian ST have?
A: The Obsidian ST has a combination of a Torque Sensor and a Cadence Sensor. The torque sensor is activated from 0-20mph and the cadence sensor takes over from there. But I felt the torque sensor still doing its thing even after 20mph.

Q: How does the Mokwheel Obsidian ST compare to other step-through e-bikes?
A: It stands out for its powerful motor, full suspension, and fat tires, offering a smooth, stable ride and a higher top speed than many competitors in the step-through category.

Q: Is the Mokwheel Obsidian ST a good value for the price?
A: Given its build quality, features, range, and performance, it offers solid value at around $2,300, though some small drawbacks like the plastic fenders and non-integrated taillight are worth considering.
