5th Wheel Torrent 1 Features and Specifications:
Power and Performance
- Motor: The Torrent 1 features a 500W motor with an 800W peak to give you the power to get up steep hills. I was able to get up a very steep hill in my testing, without the motor, I definitely wouldn’t have been able to do it.
- Battery: 5th wheel has equipped us with a 48V 14Ah LG 21700 lithium-ion battery with dual protection and key locking. It has a range of up to 35 miles on pure electric and 60 miles on pedal assist.
- Pedal Assist System: One of my favorite features of the Torrent 1 is the genuine torque sensor. It gives you a much more natural feeling by only giving power based on your pedaling intensity. Compared to a cadence sensor that is like an on-and-off switch. When you pedal, it has 100% power and no in-between. This is a feature found on much more expensive eBikes, so the fact that 5th wheel included a torque sensor on the Torrent 1 is a huge pro!
Shifting and Braking
- Shifting: The Shimano 7-speed shifter and derailleur worked really well during my testing. I was able to switch gears easily on the trail, and I had no problems with derailments.
- Brakes: The front and rear mechanical disc brakes worked really well during my steep downhill test. Sometimes they can be a little noisy, and I did have to adjust the brakes because of a slight rub.
Suspension and Design
- Suspension: The front hydraulic suspension is really nice. It has 100mm of travel and is able to cushion those bumps while on mountain bike trails. You can adjust the suspension to be more firm or soft and you can even lock it if you like.
- Design and Construction: The Torrent 1 has a lightweight aluminum alloy frame, pro-level handlebars and grips for ergonomic riding, all-terrain CST Patrol puncture-resistant tires for versatility, and an IPX4 waterproof rating for protection against rain and splashes.
Display and Accessories
- LCD Screen: The LCD is not much to write about and is very basic. But it does give you the important information you need on a ride, including speed, mode, odometer, battery level, and headlight indicator. There is a method to increase the top speed of the torrent 1 by 5mph to 25mph and I show you how to do that in my video.

The Torrent 1’s handling characteristics closely resemble those of a traditional mountain bike. Nonetheless, it offers a smooth and stable ride on paved surfaces. It maintains a steady line, making it easy to navigate through traffic or on leisurely rides. However, its tendency to maintain a straight line can make it slightly challenging to maneuver through tight turns or navigate obstacles.
With a range of up to 35 miles on pure electric and 60 miles on pedal assist, the Torrent 1 allows you to explore far and wide without worrying about battery depletion. During testing, a mixed riding style of pedal assist and throttle usage resulted in approximately half of the battery remaining after a 30-mile ride.
Genuine Torque Sensor
A surprising but welcomed feature of the Torrent 1 is its genuine torque sensor. This enhances the riding experience by providing natural and responsive pedal assistance.
